Fence guide

How to choose the right type of fence

Before you pick a style, decide what the fence is for. Privacy, security, looks, and keeping kids or pets in each point to a different kind of fence.

    Privacy

If privacy matters most, a board fence such as wood panel fencing is the usual choice. There's little or no space between boards, so neighbors and passing cars can't see in. Wood is affordable to install and looks natural, but it needs regular maintenance and the occasional board replaced.

  2. Black aluminum fence around a backyard with a Lucky Fencing sign on the gate

    Security

Security fences are usually aluminum, steel or wrought iron. They're taller and have nowhere to grip, which makes them hard to climb. If you need more and have the budget, an electric fence adds a deterrent while keeping visibility.

    Looks

For a backyard that looks its best, consider wood or custom fencing. Vinyl works for both looks and privacy, and it resists moisture.

    Keeping kids and pets in

If you mainly want to keep children or pets from crossing the boundary, chain link is usually the best option. It's galvanized or coated steel wire, low cost and easy to install.

    Pet fences

An electronic pet fence keeps pets inside a set boundary. The collar beeps as your pet nears the edge and gives a mild correction if it crosses.
